What's in today's green smoothie?

Or should I say, brown smoothie??
I’ll admit – the eye-appeal of these drinks is not always there. As you can see from the 2nd picture, the smoothie started with a lovely berry-red but after adding the greens… Well, you already saw the result! :P

Strange colors aside, I could still taste the strawberries with a hint of the clementine. And it’s the nutrients within that matter, after all. Remember the benefits I listed in last week’s Green Smoothie post? I see a clearer mind in my future as we speak… J

Today’s recipe:
·         1/2 frozen banana
·         1 clementine
·         6 small strawberries (on sale at Whole Foods!)
·         1 Tbsp. chia seeds
·         1-2 Kale leaves
·         1 handful chopped beet greens
·         1/3 cup Silken Tofu*
·         1-2 cups coconut water + spring water
Directions: Blend the first 4 ingredients with 1/2-1 cup water until smooth. Add the greens and protein source – in today’s case: silken tofu. Blend until desired consistency is obtained.

* I ran out of my protein powder this week and until I could get some more, I decided to switch it up and add silken tofu instead. This is an excellent way to add protein to your smoothie AND create a creaminess that resembles the smoothies purchased from other retailers (Tropical Smoothie, et al.). Protein powders can sometimes cause a slight graininess in the smoothie, so for those of you just trying these out – I highly recommend the silken tofu. Just remember to store the extra in an air-tight container with water so it doesn’t dry out between uses.

With what foods do you use to start your day?

Don’t forget to attend this week’s Healthy Lifestyles class on Stress with our Behavioral Nurse Specialist, Carol Zogran. We can all use some pointers on managing stress right? Class begins at 5:30 PM in the GAIM waiting room. RSVP here or with Desiree Parrish at glcgaim@gmail.com if you’d like to attend!
See you there! J
All the best,
Chloe RD and GLC
